MSCPAC Employee Shares Name with Newest Expeditionary Fast Transport Ship USNS Cody
Cody is a fifth-generation descendant of William Frederick Cody, better known as Buffalo Bill Cody. The city of Cody, Wyoming — the ship’s namesake — was named for Buffalo Bill Cody.
Cody; his mother, Wanda; and his 11-year-old son, Daniel, received a tour from Capt. Chris Jackson, the ship’s civil service master. They learned about the ship’s mission and damage-control procedures, and reviewed its lifeboats, rafts, rigid-hull inflatable boat launching systems and medical facilities.
“It was really great to be able to take my family aboard a ship that has the same name as us,” Cody said. “Seeing our family name on the ship gave me a sense of familial pride.
“It meant a lot to have my son see this ship. He wants to be an aerospace engineer and loved learning about the jet propulsion system aboard.”
USNS Cody is the 14th EPF in the MSC sealift program. The all-aluminum catamarans provide high-speed, shallow-draft transportation and are designed to rapidly move medium-sized cargo for the Navy, Marine Corps and Army. The ships can support a range of military and civilian contingencies, including noncombatant evacuation operations and humanitarian assistance.
The ship is the second variant of the EPF or a Flight II. Flight II ships have an enhanced medical mission capability, with an embarked medical unit, two operating rooms, and the ability to support approximately 41 medical patients, and 147 embarked forces. In addition, Flight II EPFs have an 11-meter Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) for special operations use, and flight deck that can accommodate the MV-22 Osprey aircraft.
USNS Cody will spend several weeks in San Diego before transiting to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations for future tasking.
